Goals can be short term like 1 month or long term like more than 2 years. Some people set lifetime goals, starting from the current age to 60 years old or more.
The sections of life that we can look into setting goals include:
- Career
- Health
- Financial
- Lifestyle
- Family
- Social
- Spiritual or others
How to set goals?
1. Write a goal statement using the acronym SMART
- S stands for specific
We need to spell out the details of what we want to achieve. We cannot be too general or we become easily distracted.
- M represents measurable
You can think of ways to monitor the results eg if you like to lose weight, you can weigh yourself and measure your waist circumference regularly. Record the readings in a notebook.
- A means achievable
We can break bigger goals into smaller and manageable ones. Make a list of the steps for achieving goals and check each off when you accomplished it. Reward yourselves when you meet the goals.
- R stands for realistic
It can take time to see results. Be patient.
- T represents time frame
Set a deadline for meeting the goals. Schedule time to review the results. We can evaluate the effectiveness of our activities daily and make the necessary changes.
2. Prioritize your goals with a scale
Tasks can be divided into:
- urgent and important
- goal oriented and non urgent
- urgent yet unimportant
– be careful not to accept responsibilities that keep us from reaching our goals
- non urgent nor important - wastes our time
